Art Park Trails
Niagara River Gorge, Lewiston, NY
Trail Type: Fishing Access, Frontcountry Hiking
With the iconic natural wonder of Niagara Falls as a backdrop, Timber & Stone, LLC worked with a team of trailbuilders to complete the installation of 388 stone steps on trails that access the river gorge. Each of the 850lb stones were hauled by machinery and then set by hand into series of staircases befitting the impressive surroundings. A customized barrier system constructed of Black Locust and stainless steel was installed along the staircases to enhance aesthetics and safety.
Timber & Stone, LLC worked in partnership with Tahawus Trails, LLC and Peter S. Jensen and Associates, LLC to design a new trail and replace the deteriorating trail structures at two sites. The completed trailwork was voted 2012 Project of the Year at the Professional Trailbuilders Association annual conference. The project was also nominated for an Outstanding Stewards of America’s Waters Award by the National Hydropower Association.
